WCU Cares is a discussion-based program that encourages participants to gain insight and understanding for helping someone experiencing mental health distress and suicidal thoughts. Goals for the program include:
1. Learn about and become comfortable using inclusive terminology around suicide.
2. Review relevant statistics and trends related to suicide, highlighting vulnerable populations.
3. Introduce Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory of Suicide to provide context to the suicidal experience.
4. Discuss signs of distress.
5. Explore ways to approach someone you are concerned about.
6. Discuss resources that are available to those in distress or crisis; understand the advantages and limitations to identified resources.
This program is suitable for anyone that interacts with others. It does contain content that can be difficult to discuss, please feel free to reach out to the trainers prior to training if you have any concerns around the subject matter but do want to participate.
If you would like to have your entire department or division trained, please contact the Counseling Center Outreach Coordinator at ccoutreach@wcupa.edu to discuss further.
