The Center for Trans and Queer Advocacy strives to be a catalyst in enhancing the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, questioning, agender, asexual, aromantic, and intersex students, staff, and faculty at West Chester University and beyond. While we explicitly name specific identities, we support all people within LGBTQIA+ communities and in our efforts to move from allyship to advocacy, we invite all WCU community members to actively engage in exploration and education around the intersections of gender, sexuality, and other social identities. The minor provides a vehicle for students to engage in leadership study. The program offers intellectual learning communities where students from multiple disciplinary areas can identify and acquire an understanding of leadership theory and leadership skills. For centuries people believed leaders were born and not made and most often came from places of privilege and/or nobility. Today's theoretical understanding of leadership debunks this antiquated notion and sees everyone with leadership potential and leadership as a set of teachable theory and practice. Vocations from a wide an inclusive spectrum prize individuals who show willingness to knowledgeably step forward and demonstrate civic engagement.

The minor in Civic and Professional Leadership Studies, housed in the Honors College, welcomes all students on campus.

Any student may apply for the minor if they complete HON 110 or CPL 120 – Leadership Theories for Today's Societies with a C+ or better.

*Students who served as Discussion Leaders [DL] for HON 110 can apply for a waiver;

Beyond HON 110 and/or CPL 120, to receive the minor, students need to complete:
A minimum of three HON seminars
A 300-level CPL seminar allowing students to directly focus leadership lessons within their academic majors

Getting Involved: University Hearing Board
The University Hearing Board is an integral part of the campus community and strives to support the mission of the department and the larger WCU community. Comprised of students, faculty, and staff, the University Hearing Board reviews student conduct cases and is the most formal process in the University's conduct system. The University Hearing Board provides an opportunity for students to serve the University community, develop life-long skills in facilitating and resolving conflicts, and promote civility and citizenship within the WCU community.

University Hearing Board members gain a variety of skills through their experience. Participation on the University Hearing Board will be included on your cocurricular transcript and is a unique leadership position for your resume.

Student-Athlete Success (SAS) engages, prepares, and inspires student-athletes to become leaders through opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Membership Benefits
The Student Athlete Success Program (SAS) emphasizes different areas of focus for student-athletes in an effort to expose and educate them in ways that differ from what is learned on the field and in the classroom. Partnerships with professionals in areas outside of athletics allow us to offer programming that may not otherwise be accessible to student-athletes and it is presented in a way that meshes their being an athlete with becoming an engaged and capable member of society. With 15-20 programs offered throughout the academic year, student-athletes will be exposed to workshops and programs related to academics, career development, civic and community engagement, diversity and inclusion, leadership, and wellness. The programs include both new and annual events that student-athletes can attend simply by signing up. Team sessions are available as well and facilitators are able to work directly with coaches to bring those programs to the student-athletes directly. Aside from set programs, SAS encompasses other student-athlete support services that adhere to the same goals. Through special and ongoing programs student-athletes are able to experience a wide range of topics.

Currently active students can make an appointment to meet with a lawyer. Students are encouraged to bring documents to the designated appointment related to the legal issue(ie, lease, citation). Please keep in mind that students are strongly encouraged to use this service BEFORE legal complications arise.

The lawyer will provide consultation on a variety of civil and criminal issues - landlord/tenant, leases, citations, etc. This is offered by appointment; and a consultation is expected to last 15 minutes. The consultation does not extend into a court room. If further legal aid is needed, the lawyer can suggest professionals for consideration, or refer students to the Lawyer Referral Service of the Chester County Bar Association. Please note that the lawyer is prohibited from taking any student cases as this may pose a conflict of interest.

Sykes Student Union is the center of community life on the campus of West Chester University. In support of the educational mission of the University, Sykes encourages and provides an environment where everyone on campus can gather to participate and learn through diversity and co-curricular experiences. Sykes provides services, conveniences, and facilities designed to support the needs of West Chester University and the community. The Union further strives to maintain a balance of recreational, social, educational and cultural programs and activities. Sykes Student Union promotes the development of the whole student by enhancing the classroom experience through experiential learning opportunities. This development is often accomplished through leadership opportunities, participatory decision-making, and empowerment connected with the operation of the facility.

Sykes Student Union was designed to operate as the center of campus where the members of campus can come together for a variety of events. Sykes has four floors. On the ground floor there is a theater that can hold 350 people, campus store, SSI window, Ram E Card office, Eco-grounds Coffee Shop, frozen yogurt machine, and a large study area for students with two computers and a printer for student use. The Lawrence A. Dowdy Multicultural center is also located on the ground floor. The first floor has the Rams Head food court, a dining area, common grounds, an area with couches and TV lounge, and an outside dining Terrace. Also located on the first floor is a 5,000 square foot ballroom for banquets, dances, and lectures, the information desk and the Sykes Administrative office (105). The second floor houses the Student Affairs Division offices of the Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life, the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement, and LBGTQA Services. The Student Services, Inc. Business Office, the Department of Student Activities, along with student clubs and organizations, and the Copy Center are also located on the second floor. The third floor includes four small meeting rooms, 23 computers, 2 Macs, and two printers. There is also a large study area which is designed as a quiet area.
