The Basics
Daedalus Literary Magazine accepts works of poetry, prose, art, and photography. You must be enrolled as a student at WCU to submit to the magazine. Every student gets five submissions per category.
We ask that every piece (including art and photography) be titled. Our club meets every other week to discuss and vote on submissions that have been made anonymous by our club's secretary. Any piece with the yes votes tallying over 50% will be accepted into the magazine. Voting is anonymous. Once your piece has been reviewed in our editorial meetings, a response will be sent to your school email address.
Email all submissions and questions to wcudaedalus@gmail.com
* If you are submitting more than one piece at a time, you do not need to send multiple emails. However, if you submit a piece one day and want to submit more work at a later date, we ask that you please send the new batch of submissions in a new email thread to ensure nothing gets lost in translation.
* Please send in your written submissions as Microsoft Word documents attached to the email via the attachment button. If you submit a file in PDF form with complex formatting, you may be asked to change it into a Microsoft Word file. Try not to submit links to a document if you can avoid it because the file needs to be accessed via the Daedalus staff email and perms are iffy sometimes. If there is an issue opening the files you have attached, the current secretary will reach out to you.
* Art and photography submissions are preferred as .jpeg or .png files.
Written Submissions
We accept works of both poetry and prose. Please submit all written works as Microsoft Word documents if possible. If your piece has complex formatting and you submit it as a pdf, you may be asked to change the file into a MS Word document so that your creative vision doesn’t get lost in translation.
Prose must be limited to five single spaced pages. Short stories that are part of a larger work are okay to submit, but they must be able to stand on their own for the reader without any extra knowledge other than the content of the piece that you submitted.
Regarding poetry submissions, if there is anything specific in the formatting or style (such as the type of poem) that you would like readers to know about, please include that in your submission email so it can be taken into consideration during meetings. It is not necessary to include things that will be noticeable such as if your poem rhymes. However, if you submit something more complex in craft like a sestina, include that in the email when you submit!
We do not accept works of research nonfiction (i.e. straight journalism, academic research, etc.) and any written work that you submit must be your own. We do not accept works of AI.
Do whatever aligns with your creative vision! Your work will appear in the magazine as it is submitted. No further drafts or revisions, treat this as your finished project.
Art + Photography
For works of art and photography, the higher the resolution, the better! Play around with angles, lighting, color, filters, or any other element you can think of. Make sure you title your piece(s) before submitting. For magazine construction purposes, .jpeg or .png files are preferred (but not required)
If you submit something as a piece of art, it must be your own.
Photographs of things such as sculptures, people, and landscapes are acceptable submissions as long as you took the photo yourself.
When photographing a well-known place or work of art, keep in mind what will set your picture of Michaelangelo's David apart from all of the others!
We do not accept advertisements or any promotional posters or logos as works of art or photography to Daedalus Literary Magazine. We do not accept AI art submissions.
