About Us

By the early 1980s, more women from culturally diverse backgrounds were pursuing higher education. In this exciting time, our founding mothers saw the need for a sorority that transcended the societal boundaries of race, religion, culture, and class. These five visionary women came together to create a support system for these women, a student organization that would celebrate diversity and foster progress for years to come. Multicultural starts with MU While other Greek organizations are and continue to grow more diverse, Mu Sigma Upsilon's foundation is built on diversity and our sisters embrace multicultural ideals and interests. We speak to use our sorority as a vehicle to educate the surrounding campus and community on issues of diversity. Ultimately, multiculturalism is the belief that there is inherent value in discovering, understanding, and appreciating all the ways in which people are different from each other. Who We Are: - The FIRST Multicultural Sorority in the Nation with over 190 Ethnicities - Founded on November 21, 1981 at Rutgers University - New Brunswick, New Jersey - Motto: “Mujeres Siempre Unidas” | “Women Always United” - Official Colors: Baby Blue & White - Moscot: The Amazon Woman - Strong, Fierce, & Independent - Nicknames: The Sophisticated Ladies, MUs - Our Goals: Academic Excellence, Unity Amongst All Women, and to be Active in the University & Community National Philanthropy: United We Dream - Every five years, the organization selects a national philanthropy as beneficiary. Through this process, we are able to dedicate ourselves as a national organization to aiding a single charity organization for five years at a time, and continue to assist many more organizations in the future. Fun Fact: Chapters are not named using the Greek Alphabet. Each chapter’s name is unique, chosen by their founders for its significance to their story and within the fabric of the organization.
